Week 37
Mon, May 29
My desire to write emails is low today,
This week has been really long, lets look at the lunch calendar to remember it
Monday, we had pday, and a family night with Grazi Vando and the Venezuelan family, it was awesome the best part was making empanadas? empanadas, tbh idk how to spell it, but i learned how to make it, they truely are amazing, Harina pan, flour, salt, and water make a dough/batter, take meat or beans of some sort maybe cheese, and then put it inside the dough and fry it, its amazing, Garces ate ten of them,
Tuesday, I ate feijoada for lunch, and asked how to make beans, i received a 30 minute response, as he told me how to make it, it seems really complicated i don't think i learned anything, i learned garlic is important, like the little ground garlic bits in oil, and that apparently its really expensive or hard to find here, After 30 minutes of listening how to make it i have no idea how to make beans, I got pretty hungry at dinner time, and i didn't have any food though, so i opened the fridge and looked at my shelf and thought to myself what can i do with Flour, and old old cheese that was beginning to harden, well i remembered the family night from the day before, and thought well i don't got harina pan, but i have flour and salt, I then thought what if i make a dough, i mixed flour and salt together, threw in a tiny bit of baking soda just for good luck because idk what it does anyways, and then mixed water into it, well i put to much water so it made an ugly mush, I tried again, failed again by putting to much water, then try three i was very carful with how much water i included, and it made a dough, i thought, well lets fry it then, i don't got meat but really I'm just trying to fill my stomach not eat something delicious, then i remembered i gave my oil to the family, but then i remembered i had old cheese in the fridge, i could put that inside, now i have a dough ball with cheese inside that is about the size of a small watermelon, well i put it in the oven, who knows what degrees or how long i cooked it for, then i remembered i had margarin (unfortunately not butter) and i "buttered" my "bread" as it cooked in the oven, when i pulled it out it was done, i ate it with margarin, and it was good, it wasn't over cooked or doughy, it completely filled my stomach, it actually tasted good too, I always wondered every time i ever baked anything how someone could possibly have figured out to put these ingredients together in this quantity to make this awesome cake or something, even bread, but on this day i realized it was just because they were hungry just as i was, and if i really wanted to i could measure the water to flour to salt ratio, and also figure out what other ingredients could make taste better, because just because i was hungry i figured out how to be full with flour salt and water, and cheese and "butter" makes it taste good too :)
Wednesday, I walked 45 minutes to lunch and when i got there i realized i forgot a tie, so i had to embarrassingly ask bishop who we ate with if i could borrow a tie, we had a little bit of success this day in finding new people which is honestly the big challenge so far that we have, we had a lot of visits and lessons fall through, we had a ward activity where elder Garces asked a member if we could eat with them because he was pretty sure he was gonna get transferred and wanted to eat with them one last time, but really it just got quiet when he asked the question, and they thought that we weren't gonna eat the next day, and thought that was why we were asking, good activity though,

Thursday
we had money for lunch, and we learned about transfer news, Elder Garces is leaving, and i will say and become a district leader, and they were gonna open up the area of amparo again, I washed my clothes this day and used the downy stuff to make them smell good, and it did make my laundry smell good, the smell was Liberdade, or freedom, its a green bottle, i thought freedom was red white and blue though, but it smells good... washing your clothes is really fun as a missionary, because when i decide to use extra of the good smelling stuff and then bring my blankets and sheets in the house at 9 pm and turn the fans on them in a desperate attempt to make them dry before i have to go to bed, it make the whole house smell like freedom, or adorable, or pink flowers, or blue flowers, just depending on what flavor i bought,
Friday the day of transfers, after Garces packed his bags and didn't say goodbye to anybody we caught a bus and drove an hour to Campinas to the bus station there, I received my new companion elder Larsen he has one more transfer than i do, we already know each other because we were already in the same zone, we prayed our bus ticket witch unfortunately we wouldn't leave until two hours later, so we went and got subway with some other elders and sisters, however subway took a long time ig, so by the time we got our food, we already had to run to the bus, where you cant eat, and take our hour long ride back to jaguariuna, at least we ate it when we got home,

Saturday
a fun day, i took Elder Larsen up to a high hill with a cool view where you can actually see Campinas, and we took some pictures there, to get to said hill we have to cross a bridge, where there is a monkey crossing sign, you know those deer crossing signs, well Brazilians find them strange, but they have monkey crossing signs, and crocodile signs, so i took a picture with the monkey crossing sign because its different, and we actually saw monkeys much later way up that high hill they were a family of six monkeys hanging out way up in the air on the power lines, The real highlight of the day was that when we got back down the bridge where the monkey crossing sign is, we actually got to see monkeys up close, and they are adorable, i took a good video of them and if you wanna see it you got to go to the photo album but ill put some pictures in the email, there was six of the monkeys, one was a baby, the Brazilians call them macaquinhos little monkeys, i really wanted to let one on my shoulder and get an epic picture, but the spirit, common sense, fear of disease/getting bit, and safety zone videos told me not to, but no can say the temptation wasn't strong, i still pet them, and fed them fruit, let them grab my bag, a nice Brazilian came over to see them too, and told me they bite, so i suppose its probably for the best i didn't let it on my shoulder, but it would have made for one of the most legendary photos, i tried giving them a book of Mormon, but they were in apostasy so they didn't accept, maybe the word of god was just to heavy for them,
Sunday
we had an American at church, he doesn't speak Portuguese so I'm sure it wasn't very fun for him, i showed the pictures of my family to the members we ate lunch with, its always super fun to show the pictures, and they always love to see them, plus i always have a reason to pull them out, heres the reason, it always comes up about how tall i am, because i am way taller then everyone here, so i can always pull them out with the sentence, "oh you think I'm tall you should see me next to my uncle ben, he is six foot ten", they then marvel at how tall my uncle is, then they marvel at how big my family is just on my moms side, then they start counting, then they count my dads side, then they look at all my other photos, the members love it, in the evening i began the setup of a brilliant not too mean prank by telling my new comp about a restaurant here that gives free juice and Salgado's to the missionaries, i told him he should get the orange juice because it's really good
Today Monday,
i pulled the prank on my comp, you see here in the area there is the restaurant that gives free juice and Salgado's to the missionaries, (and about the free pizza here too) After telling my comp to get the orange juice the day before we went, you see, the interesting thing about this place is that when you get the orange juice not only is it really really good, but you actually get more juice than if you get the other options, you get 1100ml its a lot of juice, and we also get Salgado's here too, and in my entire first transfer in jaguariuna i learned after six times of getting the orange juice and 2 Salgado's, that i can barely stuff it down without throwing up, because its a ton of food, and my already large stomach is barely big enough to hold it in, where my new comp is skinny and way smaller than me, so he ordered his orange juice, and 1 Salgado, they split the 1100ml in three cups, and with one and a half cups left, and part of his Salgado i could see he was already pushing it, i told him i knew it would be to much food and that that was why i told him to get the orange juice to prank him, with one cup left and still a little bit of his Salgado, i peer pressured him into eating the rest saying how embarrassing would it be if he didn't finish it, its free food they gave him after all, (if you are in doubt about it being a lot of food, i can tell you that its hard for me to walk after i eat that much) he ended up stuffing it down, and having an uncomfortable walk to the church, he didn't throw up, and as i write this email i heard him tell his parents that i almost made his stomach rupture, good prank ;)
